last bench clearing brawl
February 26, 1987
It maybe Ash Wednesday for us Catholics but for Hockey players its the day Brawls died in Hockey
The last Bench Clearing Brawl was 33 years ago today. This all out free for all war on ice was between the Quebec Nordiques who are now the Colorado Avalanche and Boston Bruins.
Both where rivals in the Adams division. There was a minor fight in the 1st period between Jay Miller and Gord Donnelly. But 9 minutes into the 2nd Period and Boston winning 4-0 it was enough. It was an all out war that started when Randy Moller and Nevin Markwart threw the gloves on the ice. The broadcast says Markwart[B]s gets tangled up with Moller[N] so who started this? I'm Gonna say those nasty Bostonians did since they got more Penalty minutes.
Everyone got involved in the action. My favorite parts of hockey fights or brawls, are when the goalies skate to center ice to go at it. Goalies have been around 178 ft away from each other.
[ ring is 200ft by 85 wide. and 11ft behind net to board 22 feet. 200-22=178ft] and never said a word to each other but they hate each other and want to make the other catch some waffle to the face.
These guys went at it all night late hits, another Moller and Markwart fight, and Houf and Read Larson to be the last fight in this game
After is was all said and done Burins had 96 penalty mins. and Nordiques had 71 penalty minutes. These fights gamesome life to Quebec but not enough Final score 6 Bruins -2 Nordiques
Like I said Bruins won the game 6-2 and went 39-34-7 with a 3rd place finish in the division only to be eliminated first round of the playoffs in a swept series against the Montreal Canadians that season. While Nordiques went 31-39-10 and finished 4th place in Division
